Capital Sci-Fi Con 2016

capital sci fi conIt didn’t take long to get into the convention side of things this year. Starting off with Capital Sci-Fi Con  based in Scotland’s Capital city – Edinburgh (Hence the name) held at the Meadowbank Sports Centre, it’s an event run by fans for fans, with all the money raised from ticket sales going to the children’s charity CHAS. This was my first convention of the year.

Even though this was a Sci-Fi Convention, it was rather varied and there was a huge turn out which included many local stalls and vendors. It was spread over many rooms and halls with lots to see and check out. Cosplaying as an evil character (fem.) Vader was a first for myself and there were many guest cosplayers around such as the Green Power Ranger, and there was no shortage of Star Wars cosplayers about! There was even a small number of anime cosplayers who were outnumbered by Marvel Heroes.

The event was spread out over two days, with the second day holding the cosplay contests. The weekend also held a Jedi Academy, where you could train as a Jedi with stunt double Andrew Lawden (In “Star Wars – The Phantom Menace ”, he played a Naboo soldier and was the stand in /stunt double for Qui Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson). There were also a few guests such as Dave Prowse, the lord Darth Vader (minus the voice), as well as many guest from Doctor Who and other sci-fi shows.

As it was the event that has started off my year of cons, it was a great chance to meet up with fellow con-goers and cosplayers, as over the winter there aren’t many conventions on. It felt like we had not seen each other in ages and it was a great opportunity to catch up over some bubble tea, hang out, grab photos, and even shoot some cool music cosplay videos.

Over all, Sci-FI Con was a great convention and very enjoyable. It was nice to get back into the swing of things and catch up with con-goers alike. What was your first convention of the year and which ones do you plan on going to this year? Let us know in the comments below and maybe we’ll see you there ^^;
