The film is based on the 2003-2006 supernatural suspense manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, which spawned one of the most popular and far reaching anime series of the same name, not to mention a slew of numerous other media productions. It follows the teenager Light Yagami who finds a notebook which allows its user to put people to death by writing their names. With it, he takes aim against the criminals of the world declaring himself judge, jury and executioner which sparks of game of cat and mouse with a genius detective.

With production starting this summer Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) is set to direct the film with Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) having penned a recent draft of the script.
